• Obituary: Austin American-Statesman, 12 Jun 2003, Austin, Travis County, Texas. Curtis Schwarzlose, age 68, departed this earth and began his journey in heaven on Wednesday, June 11, 2003, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in San Marcos, Texas, to Melvin John and Dorothy Ella DeViney Schwarzlose on March 11, 1935. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and son, Melvin Curtis Schwarzlose Jr. Curtis leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 32 years, Theresa Diane Ireland Schwarzlose; sister, Jean Davis and husband, Bob of Austin; daughter, Rhonda Schwarzlose Shaffer and husband, George of San Antonio; grandsons, Joe Clonts Shaffer of San Antonio and Curtis Lee Schwarzlose of Buchanan Dam; nephews and wives, Greg and Laura Davis and Chris and Christy Davis; grandniece and nephews, Heather, Brayden, Tryston and Cole Davis of Austin; and his constant companions, ``Momma Kitty'' and ``Lil Red''. Curtis was baptized and confirmed at Triumphant Love Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas, where he received friendly greetings and prayers for comfort and healing each week at the 8:00 a.m. service from the congregation and Pastor Norb. He served his country in the United States Air Force for four years of active duty and four years of inactive duty. Upon leaving active service in 1958 he joined the Austin Fire Department. He worked his way through the ranks and retired after 33 years of service as a division chief/ shift commander of the operations division, B Shift. He loved being a firefighter and many life saving training innovations were established during his tenure as division chief. Curtis and his wife shared passions for traveling, gardening, bowling and taking care of wild birds and animals including one particular squirrel that would knock on the back door for his daily handout of pecans. During his last few years battling heart disease and then brain cancer, he was an inspiration to all. He never gave up or lost his sense of humor as witnessed by those who received his many e-mails and photos. Curtis spent many hours at the computer expanding his love of photography and increasing his vast knowledge of many subjects. A very heartfelt thanks to friends, Lee Gotcher and Rodger and Betty Schmitt for their loving support and for just being there every step of the way for both Curtis and Theresa. Also, the family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Ace Alsup, his nurse, Barbara, and his wonderful office staff for all the care given to Curtis for so many years. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2003, at Triumphant Love Lutheran Church, 9508 Great Hills Trail, with Pastor Norb Firnhaber officiating. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, 2800 Hancock Drive. A reception for family and friends will be held in the fellowship hall at the church after the interment. Pallbearers for the service will be Bob Davis, Greg Davis, Chris Davis, Joe Shaffer, George Shaffer, Curtis Lee Schwarzlose, Lee Gotcher and Bill Scott.
