Curtis Schwarzlose, age 68, departed this earth and began his journey in heaven on Wednesday, June 11, 2003, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in San Marcos, Texas, to Melvin John and Dorothy Ella DeViney Schwarzlose on March 11, 1935. Curtis was baptized and confirmed at Triumphant Love Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas, where he received friendly greetings and prayers for comfort and healing each week at the 8:00 a.m. service from the congregation and Pastor Norb. He served his country in the United States Air Force for four years of active duty and four years of inactive duty. Upon leaving active service in 1958 he joined the Austin Fire Department. He worked his way through the ranks and retired after 33 years of service as a division chief/ shift commander of the operations division, B Shift. He loved being a firefighter and many life saving training innovations were established during his tenure as division chief. Curtis and his wife shared passions for traveling, gardening, bowling and taking care of wild birds and animals including one particular squirrel that would knock on the back door for his daily handout of pecans. During his last few years battling heart disease and then brain cancer, he was an inspiration to all. He never gave up or lost his sense of humor as witnessed by those who received his many e-mails and photos. Curtis spent many hours at the computer expanding his love of photography and increasing his vast knowledge of many subjects. A very heartfelt thanks to friends, Lee Gotcher and Rodger and Betty Schmitt for their loving support and for just being there every step of the way for both Curtis and Theresa. Also, the family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Ace Alsup, his nurse, Barbara, and his wonderful office staff for all the care given to Curtis for so many years.
