• General History. Thomas Slagle, born 29 April 1830, Scott or Washington Co., Virginia. His parents, Absolom Slagle & Jane Henckel, with there ten children left Virginia in the Fall of 1849, going to Daviess Co., Missouri. They were living in Holt Co., Missouri in 1860.
Thomas SLAGLE was married twice. This is verified in the 1910 census of Cass Co., Nebraska, which states he was married two times and was in his present marriage 49 years. According to family lore, his first wife was a cousin Mary who had red hair and died in childbirth and her parents raised the baby girl. These events are presumed to have occurred between 1850 and 1860. Research has not revealed the identity of Mary or her parents. Thomas SLAGLE and Nancy BURNETT were married on 24 February 1861 in Davis Co., Iowa by J. M. HUMPHRY, Justice of the Peace.
Thomas SLAGLE was in Cass Co., Nebraska by 1866 when he purchased land from his brother William H. Slagle. Cass Co., NE, Warranty Deed, Bk. H, pp. 477-478. Grantor: Wm. SLEGAL & wife Melinda of Cass Co., Nebraska Territory. Grantee: Thomas SLAGLE, of Cass Co., Nebraska Territory. Dated: 25 January 1866. Recorded: 28 April 1866. Consideration: $150, 45 acres more or less. Description: SW1/4 of SE1/4 of Sect. 20, Twp. 10, North of Range 14, East of 6th Principal Meridian & 5 acres off the East end of SE1/4 of S 1/4 of Sect. 20, Twp. 10, Range 14.

ONE OF THE EARLIEST PIONEERS IN NEBRASKA - Thomas SLAGEL, a Cass County Resident for Fifty-two Years, Has Passed Away. Thomas SLAGLE was born in Scott county, Virginia, April 30, 1830, and died at his home, south of Plattsmouth, August 31, 1911, at the advanced age of 81 years and 4 months. Thomas SLAGLE was truly one of the pioneers of Cass county . . . There remains only some three or four of the old settlers in East and West Rock Bluffs precinct. The deceased was truly a grand old man, and during his fifty-two years of Cass county life he had met with many experiences, many hardships and many happy hours, but he has always lived to gain the highest regard and friendship from all who knew him. He leaves a widow and eight children to mourn his loss, six sons and two daughters - Al SLAGLE of Wapato, Wash.; D. E. SLAGLE of Manville, Wyo.; Andrew SLAGLE of Wapato, Wash.; Abner SLAGLE of Plainview, Neb.; Mrs. W. R. GOOD of Murray, Neb.; Frank SLAGLE of Draper, S. D.; Mrs. J. I. FITCH of Plattsmouth, and Levy SLAGLE of Murray. Thomas SLAGLE moved from the home of his birth to Missouri in 1860, and was united in marriage to Nancy Lavina BURNETT in 1865, and came to Nebraska in 1865, where they have since made their home. He was laid to rest in the Lewiston cemetery.
