Companies "A," "B," "C," and "D" were organized at Camp Randall in Madison and mustered into United States service, April 15, 1864. It moved to Washington D. C. May 3-7. From Washington D.C the regiment moved into Virginia. It participated in assaults on Petersburg, the pursuit of General Lee's army, and the 1st Battalion served on duty at Arsenal, Washington, during trial and execution of President Lincoln's assassins. The regiment mustered out of active military service July 26, 1865. The regiment lost during service 1 officer and 56 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 56 enlisted men by disease. Total 113.
