• General History. Life and Times of John McEwen/McCune
John McEwen was the first child born to Richard McEwen and Sarah Sally (last name unknown) December 26, 1795 in West Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He moved with his parents from that area to around Williamsport Lycoming County, Pennsylvania and then about the fall of 1817, they all migrated to Centerville, Montgomery County, Ohio.
On September 19, 1822 he married Margaret Bingham of Washington Township, Montgomery County, Ohio(no record found on marriage). Margaret was born about 1806 in Ireland (can not find any record of her Immigrating to the U.S.).
John and Margaret had three children, a Daughter Eleanor born in 1828 and two sons Robert born in 1830 and John Wesley born in 1831. According to the US Census that I have viewed all three children were born in Ohio.
John's parents, his brothers and his sisters remained in Ohio and John's Family migrated westward, stopping for a short time in Lawrence County, Indiana and then moving on to Schuyler County, Illinois and settling in the area of Huntsville Township about 1832 - 1835. Also in that same time period, I think that Margaret died and is buried in the Huntsville area.
According to the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index and the Census of 1840 & 1850 Huntsville Township, John married for a second time to Abigail Points Aug. 1, 1836, license number 00000382. They had a daughter Nancy Ann born in 1838. The 1850 Census of Huntsville Township shows John, Abigail, Robert, Wesley, and Nancy. Abigail was born 1793 in Kentucky and died 1850 in Huntsville Township, Schuyler County, Illinois.
According to the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index and the Census of 1860 Huntsville Township, John married for a third time to Mary Van Winkle July 6, 1854, license number 00002119. They had five children four daughters Mary born in 1855, Sarah born in 1857, Hester born in 1859, Viola born in 1869 and one son William born in 1866, all in Huntsville Township. Also it showed Mary's three sons from her first marriage, John age16, Tolbert age 14, and George age10, Van Winkle.
Between 1847 and 1856, all the children from John first two marriages got married themselves in Schuyler County.
John oldest daughter Eleanor married Isaac Curry September 02, 1847 in Huntsville Township, Schuyler County, Illinois. Nancy Ann married William Clarkson July 2, 1854 in Huntsville Township, Schuyler County, Illinois. Nancy Ann Clarkson died July 30, 1857 in Huntsville.
John Wesley married Martha Jane Brown November 10, 1855 in Huntsville Township, Schuyler County, Illinois. Robert married Elizabeth Forbes June 06, 1856 in Huntsville Township, Schuyler County, Illinois.
Between 1870 and 1880 John followed his older children and moved to Hancock County, Illinois around the Saint Albans area.
In the 1880 United States Census taken in Saint Albans, Hancock County, Illinois John and Mary still had two children living at home, William age 14 and Viola age 11.
In all the US Census, it shows John's occupation as a Farmer.
John died December 25th 1882 at his farm around the West Point area. Mary McCune his third wife was born about 1825 in Kentucky. She died at the age of 90 years in 1918. She died in Saint Albans Township, Hancock County, Illinois.
John and Mary are both buried in the Cook Cemetery located in the corner of Saint Albans off Country Road 1350.
