U.S. Civil War Soldier, 1861-1865, 31 Wisconsin Infantry. Joseph and his son Levi both enlisted in Co. B. 31st. Wis. Infantry. Levi enlisted April 16, 1862, and served until July 1865. Both fought in the Civil War and were in Sherman's march to the sea. Levi is buried in a cemetery near Fairview, S. Dak on a part of the land he pre-empted from the government. Joseph is buried in the National Cemetery at Chattanooga, Tenn. He died 1909 at Graysville, Tenn.
