• General History. Joseph was Deacon of the First Church of Rowley from 1723 until his death. His will, dated 22 Apr 1752, mentions wife, Bridget; sons Nathaniel, Benjamin, Abiel, Ephraim, and Zacheus; daughters Edna, wife of Samuel Brown, and Bridget, deceased, who married Jonathan Bailey, and left sons and daughters (Essex Probate, 333: 288).
Joseph was one of the lay members of the council of Salem village church to settle the differences in the church that grew out of the witchcraft trials. (Munsell, American Ancestry, Vol.XI, p131)
Beaman Boynton, son of Dea John, wrote to a nephew in 1848: "I have heard my father say his grandfather (Dea Joseph), after he was seventy years of age, hewed a beam for a meeting house, without chalk or line, so complete, his friends would have his name and age put on the beam, that it might be read by the people".
