Obituary: The Filmore County Democrat, 21 Oct 1893, Exeter, Filmore County, Nebraska. "Died. At his home in Exeter, on Monday, October 16, Mr. Calvin M. Smith, aged 78 years. CALVIN M. SMITH was born in Jackson county, Tennessee, on the 7th of August, 1815. He moved from that state to Iowa, and came to Nebraska in 1871, taking a homestead near the banks of Indian Creek, in York county, where he resided many years. Mr. Smith was one of the earliest settlers of this part of Nebraska, and was highly respected. Of his family of eight children only four survive him: Logan Smith, of York County, Anthony Smith, of Furnas, and I. C. Smith, of Crawford, Dawes county and Miss Susan M. Smith, of Exeter. The funeral services were held at the residence, Rev. Aylesworth of the Christian church officiating. Interment took place at the Blue Valley cemetery, a large number of relatives and friends being present to witness the last sad rites and testify the respect in which deceased was held."


Calvin married Levesta Pennington, daughter of Daniel Boone Pennington and Esther Frailey. (Levesta Pennington was born on 26 Feb 1816 in Barren County, Kentucky, died on 12 Mar 1888 in Exeter, Fillmore County, Nebraska and was buried in Blue Valley Cemetery, York County, Nebraska.)
