John Bernard Deselms

• Biography: Kankakee County, Illinois. In 1863, John entered the Union Army as a Private in the 158th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and detailed as a clerk in the Adjutant's Office. He was discharged in 1865, when he finished his studies and graduated from Kankakee Academy. He taught a number of years at the DeSelm School and also served as postmaster at DeSelm.
John married Harriet Maria Wilkins November 17, 1874 Wilmington, Will Co., IL. She was the daughter of Abraham Wilkins & Laura Ann Milk. After their marriage, John and Harriet lived at the family homestead for a few years. John entered the Secret Service in 1879 and in 1881 went to work for the Mail Service, where he worked for 30 years. He was active in the Methodist Church, Grand Army of the Republic and Modern Woodmen Lodge. John gave the land used for the DeSelm School.
