• Obituary, Aug 1968, El Dorado, Union County, Arkansas. Franklin Lorenzo Irby was the second of nine children born to John William Harris "Bill" Irby (1856-1934) and his wife Cleopatra "Patra" Beachum (1861-1931). His paternal grandparents were James Hogan Irby and his wife Mahala Ann Griffin, of Union Co., NC; and his maternal grandparents were Jeremiah Washington Beachum and his wife Mary Jane Taylor, of Anson Co., NC.
Frank was born in Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC, where his parents had a hotel. In 1890 they moved to Union County, Arkansas, and established a farm.
Frank wanted to become a doctor. To help him finance his education, his mother would drive each week in a horse-drawn hack to Wesson (a nearby sawmill town) to sell vegetables, fruit, milk, butter and chickens. His brother, Walter, loaned him money he had earned and saved.
Frank paid for the college education of a number of his nieces and nephews. He did become a doctor, and eventually owned a small hospital in El Dorado, Arkansas.
During the oil boom of the 1920s in south Arkansas, people often went sightseeing to watch a well "blow in." Uncle Frank's fiancee was killed on one of these excursions to see a well which collapsed, forming a crater into which some of the spectators fell.
Later in life (about 1961) he married his nurse, Estelle Roye, the daughter of Joseph Sylvester and Mary Leonard Roye of Rayville, Louisiana.
