• Obituary: Freeport Daily Journal, 7 Mar 1910, Freeport, Stephenson County, Ilinois. John Stahl, a once well-to-do mill owner, died Sunday noon at the county farm, where he was taken three days before. Heart trouble brought about his death. Mr. Stahl had resided in Freeport prior to his death, and was well known in Stephenson county.
Mr. Stahl was born in Pennsylvania, September 3, 1823, and came went in the fall of 1871. He settled at Cedarville and was employed at the mill owned by John H. Addams, where he received a thorough lesson in mill work. Three years later he went to Lena, where he was similarly employed. He soon left Lena and bought the mill along the Rock Run creek, near Farwell's bridge, and was in active charge. Selling this mill he returned to Lena and purchased the mill where he was formerly employed. Selling this property he returned to Freeport and retired, after amassing a sung sum of money. Financial reverses swept away his fortune and at the time of his death Mr. Stahl was almost penniless.
Mr. Stahl's wife died in September, 1869. Three children survive their father. They are Edmund P. Stahl, Miss Maggie Stahl, both of this city, and R. I. Stahl, who is somewhere in the west. A sister, Miss Kate Stahl of Lena, also survives, as do five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Deceased was affiliated with the Second Presbyterian church at the age of forty-three years. His body will be taken to Lena for interment.
